The series is based in the fictional country of Kuchen (supposedly an island by Europe). It's a country run by monarchy King who has several top officials helping him to run the country. Basically the most prestigous job in the country is to become one of the top officials helping the king. The main characters of the series are all students at the prestigous Rozenstolz Academy. They are the top students at the school (grades, and most importantly family importance) and they are called "Strahl Candidates" because they are considered the most likely candidates for becoming officials of the King in the future - although in reality not all of them aspire for this.
The anime is a bit of a strange thing. It explores lots of political topics and other deep (and a little dry topics). In my opinion you will get a lot more out of the series if you've ever had to study Plato or Socrates in school, as you will better understand several of the main themes. A large part of the show is spent questioning "how is the government supposed to be" and part of the reason Ludwig and Orpherus are always having glaring matches is because they have very different opinions on this question. So if you don't like deeper "thinking" animes, this might not be your cup of tea.
Unlike most series the main plot is very tighly connected between the two seasons. In fact Season 1 ends with a HUGE cliffhanger, so I would not recommend watching it if you don't have access to Wieder, haha. The episodes in the first season focus on the characters, and it pretty much spends one episode focusing on each of the 5 students + the obligatory "older guy" (who is in the series because dating sims almost always have an older guy you can go after, lolz). So it starts slow, plot wise but then picks up a lot at the end of Season 1 and throughtout Season 2. The animation is decent, and the voice acting is top notch (they pulled in some major talent!).
